Blackjack strategy is not a system for winning — it is the set of decisions that lose least. Four rules cover most of the value, and they are worth more than any betting pattern ever devised.

Stand on hard 17 or higher, always. The card that improves it does not exist often enough to justify the bust risk.

Hit hard 12 to 16 when the dealer shows 7 or higher. It feels wrong, because busting is immediate and visible. Standing loses more often; it just loses later.

Always split aces and eights, never split tens or fives.

Double on 11 against anything but an ace. The single most profitable situation in the game — take it every time it appears.

Table rules that quietly change the edge

Two blackjack tables can look identical and differ by more than a full percentage point. This is where the money actually is:

The one to check before anything else is the blackjack payout. A natural should pay 3:2. Tables paying 6:5 have spread because most players do not read the felt, and that single change costs about 1.4% — more than every strategy decision you will make all session, combined.

Why the dealer's upcard decides everything

Basic strategy looks like a wall of arbitrary rules until you notice it is answering one question: how likely is the dealer to bust? A dealer showing 2 through 6 must draw to a made hand and busts roughly 35 to 42% of the time. Showing 7 through ace, that falls to around 26%. Every decision in the chart follows from that split.

It is why you stand on a miserable 13 against a 5 — you are not betting your hand will win, you are betting the dealer's will lose — and why you hit that same 13 against a 9, where standing means hoping for a bust that usually will not come. The hand you hold matters less than the hand the dealer is forced to build. That single idea explains most of the chart without memorising it.

What basic strategy actually saves you

Roughly one percentage point. On a decent table, correct play holds the house to about 0.5%; instinct play runs nearer 2%. Over an evening of 200 hands at £10, that gap is about £30 — not life-changing, but it is the difference between blackjack being the cheapest game on the floor and it being a mid-table one.

Note what it does not do. Basic strategy does not make blackjack a winning game, and no version of it turns a negative expectation positive. It minimises a loss. Anyone selling something stronger than that is selling card counting, which requires a shoe dealt down over multiple hands and therefore does not exist online — the virtual deck reshuffles every hand, so there is nothing to count.

The table above is the right place to build the habit, because the cost of getting a decision wrong is nothing. Play a few hundred hands with the chart open beside you and the common situations stop requiring thought — which matters, because the decisions basic strategy asks for are precisely the ones that feel wrong at a real table.
